Is your word worth a click?

Are you familiar with the infamous bounce rate?
Do you wonder how to make visitors stay longer on your site?
You could optimize your visual, your navigation…  but what about your copy?

If quality pictures and an easy structure are important indeed, a good copy is an integral part of any SEO strategy, keeping in mind that:

Search engines have no taste.

Search engines cannot (yet?) recognize pictures the way we do. Your visitors will be impressed by high quality images, but the most you will get from, say, Google is that  “there is an image of something at this address”.

Visitors, though, do.

A clean, to the point, yet attractive copy will keep your visitors on-site and provide them with the information they need. A bad copy, lacking of focus, ridden with typos, will turn away readers and rob you of your conversions.

So, what should be done about it? Read ahead!

Avoid literature.

There is one case in which you should use the best, most impressive prose possible: if you are a writer, selling your work online.

In all other cases, it’s enough for a copy to:

  • Give the right information
  • Stay on topic
  • Be written with sales in mind
  • Make the reader do things

Any example?

“Here at Spotbyte, we are found of holistic online knowledge. Our vast, complete experience allows us to sublime SEO into an Art Of The Web. We elevate websites to the highest heights through our honed techniques: SEO, SMO, ROI, Outbound and Inbound marketing have no secret for us!”

This paragraph is completely self centered, doesn’t talk to the reader and, frankly, after reading it you still don’t have a clue of what it is about.

“Increase both your traffic and profit! Be found in a blink on Google, Yahoo, Bing, Facebook with website optimization, content reviews and online strategies by Spotbyte, SEO experts. Take a look at our free tutorials or contact us now!”

The second snippet though, introduces Spotbyte and its services in a no nonsense kind of way, tells you what you will gain from it and invite you to take action.

Be vocal.

Both search engine and visitors like fresh content.
As a local business or a global brand, you do know about your clients’ questions and concerns. Provide them with help and answers via a news section on your website. Your content will be picked up by search engine, and you will increase your customer’s engagement.

Be readable.

Easy content is read fast, impacts better and respects your visitors’ attention span. There are several automated methods to analyze your content and let you how accessible it is.
My favorite is http://www.read-able.com/ , give it a try, the result could be surprising!
